With Les Dernières, Djamal B set out to bring together everything he loves in a single project and create the kind of music he would want to listen to himself.
At the heart of this album lies a dialogue between the legacy of Django Reinhardt, the elegance of the French swing tradition represented by Jean Sablon, Henri Salvador and Sacha Distel, and the influence of artists such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker.
The quintet was conceived as a meeting point between these musical worlds. Built around a traditional Gypsy jazz rhythm section of two guitars and double bass, the ensemble is enriched by piano, alto saxophone and vocals. This instrumentation expands the group's sonic palette, creating a space where tradition meets a contemporary approach to composition and arrangement.
The quintet features:
Djamal B - vocals, solo guitar
Gaspard Baradel - alto saxophone
Antoine Bacherot - piano
Francois Brunel - rhythm guitar
Philippe Monge - double bass
In shaping this repertoire, Djamal B wanted to combine several approaches: writing original songs, revisiting classics of the French jazz repertoire, and creating original French lyrics for selected standards from the Great American Songbook. Every arrangement was conceived with respect for the spirit of the original works while offering a personal interpretation.
Les Dernières brings together nine tracks: three original compositions, three classics from the French repertoire, and three American standards, two of which have been adapted into French.
More than a tribute, this album is an attempt to carry a tradition forward by giving it a contemporary voice.
